IDFC FIRST Bank and Sarvam partner to build the world's first self-improving bank
The joint R&D Lab will work across frontier research, post-training and AI safety to build banking systems that can learn and improve over time.
IDFC FIRST Bank and Sarvam are bringing deep banking expertise and frontier AI research together to solve some of banking's hardest problems and make deep R&D a faster engine for growth.
Building the next
generation of banking
IDFC FIRST Bank has set out to become the world's most technology-forward bank, with technology and deep R&D playing a central role in how it grows and serves its customers.
Some of the most complex problems in banking are ultimately human ones. Fair pricing, personalised financial guidance and helping customers make decisions with confidence all depend on understanding context and individual needs.
Through the joint R&D Lab, IDFC FIRST Bank and Sarvam will apply frontier AI to these challenges, developing systems that can learn from real-world performance and improve over time. This continuous cycle of research, deployment and improvement is central to the ambition of building the world's first self-improving bank.
The Lab will also create an environment for some of India's best AI talent to work at the frontier of data science and large language models, and apply that research to financial services.
Frontier research
Advancing AI and large language models to develop new capabilities for banking and financial services.
Post-training factory
Building the systems to systematically evaluate, adapt and improve models based on banking tasks and real-world performance.
Regulator-grade safety and AI security
Building evaluation, governance, safety and AI security into the development process so AI systems can operate with the controls required in a regulated environment.
From the partnership
Two perspectives on what the lab is setting out to build.
Sarvam has developed AI models built on the ground in India, using Indian data and sovereign compute. That is what makes us believe that together we will redefine what a truly world-class, customer-centric bank can deliver for its customers.
The opportunity is to make AI part of how a bank is built. IDFC FIRST Bank brings the banking context and the ambition. Sarvam brings AI models built in India. The R&D Lab is where those ideas can become systems for customers.
